AMERICORP VISTA PROFILE – Sara Loken

AmeriCorps VISTA worker Sara Loken Sara started at the Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin last July, In discussing her work with the tribe, Sara enthusiastically said, “I like how open and friendly everyone is. Everyone tells stories and jokes and it really makes me feel welcome to be included by them. I’ve enjoyed getting to know everyone!”

Sara did not have to travel far to serve in the VISTA position since she calls Green Bay, Wisconsin home. In May 2005, she graduated from Northern Michigan University with a bachelor degree in criminal justice. After college, she wanted to join AmeriCorps or the PeaceCorps before she got too busy. “I wanted to help my community because I really enjoyed growing up in Green Bay and knew some people weren’t as lucky as I was. I chose to work in Oneida because it was close to home and I didn’t have to leave my boyfriend, friends, and family; I felt like I was giving back to the community I grew up in, was familiar with and loved,” Sara explained.

In working with the Elders served by the tribe, Sara especially enjoys “how they can speak from their own experiences and don’t take things for granted”. Of her experience overall, Sara feels “lucky to work with great people”.

After serving with AmeriCorps, Sara took a position in her community working in the Aging network.
